Nearly half (45%) of Americans make New Year’s resolutions, according to a University of Scranton report released earlier this year.  But even though so many people proclaim a desire to change,  for whatever reasons, six months later 46% of them did not keep their resolve.  The key, according to some psychologists, is to make a surefire, detailed plan.  For example, resolving to “make more money in my business” is too vague – instead, try a specific goal, such as, “increase growth by 20% in the first six months.” And no matter your business model, you’ll need to consider private security as part of your overall planning.

Since a detailed plan is recommended for increasing the likelihood of following through on a New Year’s resolution, here are some specific points for planning your business’s private security for the upcoming year.

1. Assess the routine.  Private security can include a doorway security guard, security cameras, security patrols, security background checks, and much, much more. The effectiveness of private security is largely due to regularly-stationed personnel, manning various aspects of your business. When looking at this year, consider whether you had enough routinely-scheduled, private security.

2. Determine deterrent/prevention success. When someone walks into your place of business, is it clear that it is outfitted with private security? Are there private security officers in uniform, and cameras in view?

3. Calculate security breach costs. How often were you attacked, whether overtly or silently? If there were thefts or property damages, how much was the loss tally? Include in your calculation lost hours of work for product recovery, working with police, reconstruction, and handling staff morale.

4. Compare against competitors. When you stroll by a competitor’s store or office, how does the security look? Is it better, worse, or the same as yours?

5. Consult.  The above points provide the initial honing-in on your business’s private security level and success rate. From here, it is best to consult with a professional private security firm in order to best gauge where your business stands on private  security. ISSM provides professional assessments for you to ascertain where you can improve on private security.

While many Americans are making personal New Year’s resolutions, each American business can also take advantage of the beginning of the year to make its own resolutions. Since private security is a piece of the puzzle of a business’s success, resolving to assess your business’s quality of private security will surely prove fruitful. Happy New Year!
